The SS Republic was a Civil War-service sidewheel steam ship which was used as a blockade runner in 1861. She was renamed several times before her final voyage from New York to New Orleans. Carrying passengers and over $400,000 in coins (mostly gold), the vessel was hit by a hurricane on the fifth day of her voyage causing a massive failure. Most passengers escaped via lifeboats and makeshift rafts, but her gold was lost to the sea off the coast of Georgia. In 2003, Odyssey Marine Exploration located the SS Republic approximately 100 miles off the coast of Georgia and recovered an estimated $75 million worth of rare Civil War-era gold and silver coins from one of America's most famous shipwreck treasure discoveries.

The SS Central America, famously known as the "Ship of Gold," was carrying hundreds of passengers, crew, and an enormous shipment of gold when it was lost in a hurricane in 1857. The disaster claimed 425 lives and sent an estimated 30,000 pounds of gold to the bottom of the Atlantic, contributing to the Panic of 1857 and becoming one of the most legendary maritime losses in American history. More than 150 years later, modern recovery expeditions returned to the wreck site, recovering remarkable gold coins and treasure from the ocean floor. Today, artifacts and coins from the SS Central America remain among the most sought-after shipwreck collectibles in numismatics, connecting collectors to one of the greatest lost treasure stories ever told.

The SS Brother Jonathan met its fate in July 1865 when violent storms drove the sidewheel steamer onto the rocks near St. George Reef off the coast of Northern California. The ship sank just miles from safety, claiming more than 200 lives and becoming the deadliest maritime disaster in Pacific Coast history. Long believed to be carrying a significant cargo of gold, the wreck remained lost for over a century before modern treasure hunters finally located it and recovered gold coins, bullion, and personal artifacts from the ocean floor. Today, coins recovered from the Brother Jonathan represent a direct connection to one of America's most tragic and legendary shipwreck treasure stories.

In late November 1942, the SS Tilawa left Ballard Pier in Bombay, headed for Durban, Mombasa, and Maputo. During World War II, the ship was serving as a troopship and carried 732 passengers, 222 crew members, and 600 tons of cargo. Among that cargo were 2,391 bars of silver bullion, intended to be turned into South African and Egyptian coinage at the South African Mint.

On November 23, 1942, near the Seychelles Islands, the Tilawa was struck by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine I-29. Lifeboats were launched after the first hit, but a second torpedo sank the ship.  For more than 75 years, the silver cargo of the SS Tilawa remained hidden nearly 1.5 miles beneath the Indian Ocean.

In 2017, marine salvage company Argentum Exploration, working alongside maritime historians and deep-sea recovery specialists, located the wreck at a depth of approximately 2.5 kilometers and recovered 2,364 of the ship's 2,391 silver bars, representing nearly 99% of the lost treasure.

The discovery quickly became one of the most significant precious-metal recoveries in modern maritime history. What followed was a years-long legal battle over ownership of the silver, involving salvage rights, international law, and the governments connected to the original cargo. Special coins were minted from the recovered silver including Krugerrand and Britannias that can be found in this series's break packs.

Trade goods, supplies, and thousands of copper Cash Coins intended for commerce in India disappeared beneath the waves, seemingly lost forever.

In the darkness of August 28, 1944, the SS John Barry crossed the Arabian Sea carrying a valuable wartime cargo destined for Saudi Arabia. Hidden within its hold were millions of silver riyals intended for circulation in the Middle East, along with persistent rumors of an even greater treasure: tons of silver bullion reportedly bound for the Soviet Union.

Before the ship could reach its destination, disaster struck. A German U-boat detected the Liberty ship and launched a successful torpedo attack, sending the John Barry and its cargo more than 8,500 feet beneath the surface. There, the wreck remained untouched for nearly half a century, protected by the crushing depths of the Arabian Sea.

In 1994, a team of American salvors finally located the wreck and undertook one of the most ambitious deep-sea recovery operations of its time. Using technology adapted from the offshore oil and gas industry, the expedition recovered more than 1.3 million silver riyals weighing roughly 17 tons.

Yet the story may not be over. Despite the remarkable recovery, no trace of the rumored Soviet silver shipment was ever found. Some historians and treasure researchers believe additional silver may still rest within the wreck, hidden beneath debris and beyond the reach of the recovery technology available at the time.

Today, coins recovered from the SS John Barry represent more than shipwreck treasure. They are surviving pieces of a wartime mystery that may still hold secrets on the ocean floor.
